This time, I'd like to talk about my Halloween experience in Japan.
When I first came to Japan, Halloween wasn't as popular as it is now. At the company I used to work for, we wore costumes for Halloween and encouraged our students to do so as well. This event was always a nice reprieve from regular lessons. Instead of teaching from a textbook, we played more games and taught Halloween vocabulary. It was a fun event.
On the other hand though, getting your hands on a costume was always a hassle because there were only a few places that sold them. If you wanted to go all out, you had to make your own costume. At the time, if my memory serves me right, the only place that had a decent selection of Halloween/party goods was Don Quihote. It was there that most of us would go.
Unfortunately, the selection was limited because Halloween wasn't so popular yet. Fast forward 10 years and now Halloween decorations, costumes, and goods can be found almost in every store.
It sure has made finding a costume, much easier. Also Halloween themed snack bags are more common than before.
Halloween sure has come a long way. It is no longer just an event held at English schools or for parties. Some communities in Japan have even begun organizing Halloween walks and trick or treat. Nowadays, young children and their parents can participate in Halloween by searching for events.
