Rent or
borrow?
Many people who begin learning English have come across these words at least a few times.
They are used wrong more often than you would think. Today, you will learn the correct way to use them.
Simply said, the verb
rent is used when there is money involved for the item wanted.
For example:
I rented DVDs from Tsutaya last weekend.
That business rents the building from my father.
The verb
borrow is used when there
ISN'T money involved for the item wanted.
For example:
I borrowed my neighbor's shovel.
He forgot his pencil, so he borrowed my pencil.
People borrow books from the library.
EXCEPTION: You can borrow money if you are going to pay him/her back.
