Depending on many things, the traditions we have or do during OBON vary drastically.
Every year, when we visit the in-laws, I am given the task of making the cow and horse. It is an interesting concept in itself. If my understanding is correct, I use a cucumber that has a slight curve to symbolize the horse. To make the cow, I use an eggplant with the stem attached and pointing towards the ground. After making them, I place a piece of udon on the back of the animals to symbolize the reins on the animals.
The horse is used to transport the ancestors back to the family altar which is usually at the home of one of the descendants. After the OBON holidays, the cow is used to transport the ancestors back to the spirit world. I enjoy making them and also enjoy participating in some of the other traditions.
What are some things you do during OBON? Do you make some of the same things?
