This week we'll be talking about how to describe people's facial appearance.
Here are the rules!
When describing people with adjectives in English, the order is
determiner,
opinion,
size,
age,
shape,
color,
origin,
material, and
purpose. This order is called DOSA-SCOMP.
Example
"My favorite big old square white French cotton gardening hat"
Explanation
Determiner: The first word in the sentence, such as "my", "that", or "a"
Opinion: The quality or observation of the subject, such as "lovely", "useful", or "cute"
Size: The physical description of the subject, such as "big", "little", or "tall"
Age: The age of the subject, such as "old", "new", or "young"
Shape: The shape of the subject, such as "circular", "irregular", or "triangular"
Color: The color of the subject
Origin: The place of origin of the subject, such as "French"
Material: The material of the subject, such as "cotton"
Purpose: The purpose or qualifier of the subject
Changing the order of adjectives can make a sentence sound nonsensical, so try to stick to the rules. Describing people can be a bit difficult, but give it a shot!
