Welcome back to another week of Teacher'sコーナー! This time, I'd like to talk about the how to read acronyms. First of all, what is it? Well, an acronym is an abbreviation of a set of words to make writing or displaying easier.

In general, three word abbreviations like VIP are read not like a word, but instead are read as letters like ABC.

Here are some examples.

VIP (very important perso) = title given to people of importance or influence
KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) = name of a restaurant
LOL (laughing out loud) = used to express something is very funny
CPU (central processing unit) = spinal cord of a computer
AFK (away from keyboard) = not on the computer presently
USA (the United States of America) = a country in North America

But.... there are some exceptions. Here are a few that are read as words.

RAM (random access memory) is read as "リャム". = brain (stores information being used at the moment)
CAD (computer aided design) is read as "キャドゥ". = software using to design models

On the other hand, four letter abbreviations are read as words or are read as the original word. Here are some examples.

NATO is read as "ネート" = North Atlantic Treaty Ogranization
TBSP is read as "テーブルスプーン" = measurement for cooking
ASAP is read as "エイサェプ" = as soon as possible
AWOL is read as "エーヲル" = absent without leave (used in the military)
NASA is read as "ナーサー" = National Aeronautics and Space Administration

But like anything, there are exceptions. Here are a few.

HTML is read as "H-T-M-L" = standard markup language for creating web pages.
NAACP is read as "N-double A-C-P" = National Association for the Advancement of colored people.
