I grew up in the middle of America and I grew up eating freshwater fish. I occasionally had shrimp when I went out to eat, but never anything else.
When I first came to Japan, I had the opportunity to visit fish markets. Although it was very fascinating to see the many kinds of creatures living in the sea for sale, I couldn't get over the smell of it. It was very "fishy" to me. Even to this day when I do my grocery shopping, I often walk quickly past the seafood section or skip it all together.
My point is that, I find it very interesting that people who grew up eating seafood, are not bothered by the smell, but instead believe it smells good whereas freshwater fish have a distinctive "fishy" smell.
What do you think of the smell of the fish markets or the seafood section of the supermarkets? How about the smell of freshwater fish? Have you ever eaten them to confirm that they smell "fishy"?
