For many people spring is a season of the renewal of life. Trees sprout leaves, flowers bloom vigorously, swarms of insects take to the air, animals appear from nowhere and flocks of birds migrate back to mate.

For me spring is the best season to wipe the dust off the fishing poles and tacklebox and hit the rivers. During this season, fish are the easiest to catch because they have been laying dormant
all winter long. In my home state of Wisconsin, many kinds of fish can be caught and in large numbers from as early as March depending on the water temperature.

Some of the easiest fish to catch are schooling fish, of which some are called panfish. Probably because they can fit in a frying pan. My favorite panfish to catch are crappie and Wisconsin has plenty of them. Because they are easy to catch, children won't be bored easily. They can be caught on a variety of bait, but prefer minnows (small fish). They can also be caught on lures and soft baits as well.

Another type of fish that can be caught in large numbers and relatively easily is the white bass. These too are schooling fish, so once you have found a hungry school of them, you'll be in for a great day of fishing. Unfortunately, these fish are a little more difficult to find and live in deeper bodies of water making it more difficult for children or beginners to catch. These fish can be caught a variety of bait as well. Lures also work well when you have found a big school of fish.

Late spring (April & May) is also good for the Largemouth Bass, as they tend to spawn once water temperatures have reached the low 70's (~20 degrees Celsius). During this time, many sports fishermen hit the lakes in search of the lunker (a bass over 10 pounds/4.5 kilograms). They can be caught on anything that resembles life. Many fisherman have fished their entire lives and have never caught a lunker. I know I have yet to catch mine.

There are many ways to prepare fish, but I like to eat them two ways. I tend to steam them in tinfoil with a handful of herbs and spices and eat them with rice. Occasionally, I filet them and deep fry them in a batter and serve them with a slice of lemon and some tarter sauce.

What kind of fishing do you do or did you do? What do/did you usually catch? How do/did you eat them?
